A puzzle on Ancestry/Fold3
« on: Sunday 10 May 20 15:49 BST (UK) »
Taking advantage of free Ancestry records this weekend, I put in Edward Kates born Berkshire c1800 on Search all records. Up came an entry in Household Cavalry Records : Edward Kates born Windsor 1799. There's a link to the original image on Fold3. This looked good, but at the side are transcribed details from somewhere and the family details didn't match my man. In fact, they look downright odd!
Underneath the image is a slide show of other soldiers names so I clicked on one. And all the family details are the same as Edward...and the next...and so on!
Why would all these different men be given the same family details? Has anyone come across this before?

Ancestry has been having problems today, there's repeatedly been a banner at the top of the screen saying as much.  I was looking at an immigration hint for someone earlier today and the page was of a different family entirely.  It'll probably go back to normal when the offer's finished!

I would just ignore their transcript and make sure that you have copies of the original document stored safely on your computer.
