Dedham Baptism record of Emma GINN
« on: Sunday 10 May 20 17:17 BST (UK) »
HI. I'm trying to locate the baptism record of Emma GINN, my 2nd great grandmother.

Emma was born about 1833 in Dedham, Essex (according to census records - 8 years old on 1841).
Her father was Edward GINN, and he was married to Ann SPURLING in 1820.
They had children in the 1820's all in Dedham.

However, I found Edward was buried in 1830!

Can anybody help me out please?

Only one I see is Emma Ginn baptised Feb 1834 parents Charles and Ann.

How old is she in 1851?  Is she with her mother on census?

Marriage in 1853 says "of full age"

father Edward deceased publican

so if Edward definitely died in 1830 he wasn't her father but who else is she with in 1841 because relationships aren't given.

For info:

In 1851 at Lambeth, servant for the GARRAWAY family
Emma C GINN  19    Dedham

Also, in case you haven't seen it, there are these advertisements in The Ipswich Journal ( Saturday,  Nov. 11, 1837, and Saturday,  Feb. 17, 1838 ), and Chelmsford Chronicle Friday,  Oct. 6, 1837. I'm assuming it's the same Ann. Though why is she at a sickle makers if Edward was a publican? (Though sometimes these businesses could be combined - I have an ancestor who had a blacksmith business behind the inn he ran.)

Oh, I can't attach on lookup threads - here's a transcription:

"To Edge Tool Makers, & Smiths in General
TO BE PUT OFF
That well known and old established Edge Tool Maker's and Smith's Shop in general, abutting on Stratford Bridge, Stratford, St. Mary's, Suffolk. Apply on the Premises, or by Letter (Post Paid) to Ann Ginn, Dedham, near Stratford Bridge, Suffolk"
Chelmsford Chronicle Friday,  Oct. 6, 1837.

Oh, a SPURLING relative owned the sickle business.

Some advertisements from 1836, this one from the Essex Standard, Friday,  June 17, 1836 :

"A CAUTION
To Farmers, Harvestmen, and Vendors of Sickles.
WHEREAS, there have been sickles sold through the Counties of Essex and Suffolk, with a fictitious name branded thereon, this to inform the above, that the genuine make are branded "W. SPURLING, Dedham, S.X." All Sickles branded different from this are not his make.
All Orders are thankfully received and immediately attended to, by directing to
W. SPURLING,
EDGE TOOL AND SICKLE MAKER,
Dedham Bridge, adjoining Stratford Bridge."

Interestingly, when John GINN was baptised 3rd August 1828, Edward's occupation was given as "Toll-gate Keeper". It appears that Edward was recorded as a Toll Keeper at the christening of all children from Mary, Ann, Edward James & John.

Wonder when he became a publican?

(BTW Mary's name was "Mary Leppingwell GINN" at bp)

He leaves everything to wife Ann - furniture, household goods and money. No mention of anything associated with being an innkeeper such as stock in trade. No mention of property. If he was a toll-keeper they likely lived in a toll-house which went with the job and she and the family had to move out after he died. he signed his will - good signature. The witnesses were both Spurlings - John and Henry. After Henry's signature it says Attorney, Stratford St Mary Suffolk.
Looks like Ann's relatives.
