Hi raa,
That would be a subsequent name change later - probably re-marriage. The register was used for many years after by the NHS and up-dated when necessary.

The surname which has been crossed out was her surname as at 1939, the new surname is a later addition.  So if the entry was for Edna Smith and then Green was added, that means that Edna Smith becomes Edna Green.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!
If you don't ask the question, you won't get an answer.

I would like to add that it is always worth looking at the document as you have done because sometimes the transcription has it round the wrong way.

A plus point is that many of these amendments are dated.

Note that the date is when the register was updated, not when the name changed. This might follow, for example, when a woman first visited her doctor after getting married.

It does let you narrow down the search for other records.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.
