« on: Monday 11 May 20 10:12 BST (UK) »
Hello

I'm looking to find my 5 x Great Grandfather Edward Smith a photo of his headstone / inscription buried 1734 St Mary's Church Caldicot I need to find out how old he was when he died so I can find a birth / baptism record for him.

Just to add Edward Smith married 1725 Elizabeth Herbert daughter of Vere Herbert sherrif of Caldicot 1707

Thanks

May be able to help and if there is not an existing image you can request one.

That said after nearly 300 years most headstones are very difficult to read if there is a headstone at all.

There is a tree on Ancestry that has his birth at 1700 in Cornwall.

Thank you for contacting me well I have Edward Smith's Will dated 1734 of Caldicot
but it doesn't state his age as his marriage transcription states hes from Cornwall but no age given on marriage record so I wondered if his age was given on his burial record or on inscription of headstone.  I was going to look myself but am on lockdown in Hove.

Yes that is my family tree and the birth year is a rough guess.

Edward Smith of Caldicot married Elizabeth Herbert of St Michaels Parish Bristol at St Mary Redcliffe, Bristol by Licence.  Have you seen the licence, does it give any information as to whether Edward was a bachelor / widower

Thank you for your reply I havnt seen the marriage licence.  Because Bristol Archives said it's too delicate to be transcribed.  But only this partial transcription from Bristol archives and reply to me from them.

Dear Elizlloyd

Thank you for your email of 10 December.

Unfortunately I am unable to send you a copy order form for the marriage licence of Edward Smith and Elizabeth Herbert as all of the marriage licences from 1723 – 1726 are too delicate to be digitised or to be made available to the public.

However, according to a partial transcription that was made many years ago, Edward is recorded as being from Cornwall and Elizabeth from St Michael, Bristol. Edward’s bondsman is listed as a John Thomas of Bristol.

I do wonder how accurate the transcript of the licence was particularly as the marriage entry has him of Caldicot, Monmouthshire.   The licence would not normally be listing a place of birth.

Thanks
