Los Angeles orphanage 1930s
« on: Tuesday 12 May 20 00:16 BST (UK) »
My mother was told that she had been at an orphanage in Downtown Los Angeles for a short time while an infant in the early 1930s. She thinks the name of the orphanage was "Bydee Bye," or something like that. Does anyone know what the name of this orphanage was? Thanks!

Have you found her on the 1930 census?  Any particular religion?

Here's a list of some California orphanages.

I just rechecked with my Mom, and she now thinks that this was a home for unwed mothers (not an orphanage) in Downtown Los Angeles, near the Angels Flight funicular railway on Bunker Hill. She thinks it was started by an African-American woman.

This appears to be the place you are referring too.
"Bydee Bye,"  is close ...It's "Bide-A-Wee"

Bide-A-Wee Home for deserted mothers was built at 1315 Pleasant Avenue in Boyle Heights. Opened in 1923, the campus had 16 bungalows and an employment bureau and offered child care assistance. Many of the women gave the children up for adoption, and mothers who didn't were required to work and pay nominal rent if they were able, after their personal expenses were met.

It appears a Minnie Barton who was a policewoman(parole officer) was a part of this as well Minnie Barton home that opened in 1918.

This would be Minnie in the 1930/1940 censuses.
