Janet Moorcraft nee Cameron
« on: Tuesday 12 May 20 01:04 BST (UK) »
Just starting research on this lady and wondering where in Scotland she was born. She was married in Camberwell London in 1880.

You could have given us a bit more here i.e. she was bc.1854 (per census) and dau. of Alexander Cameron, a mason (from marriage certificate).

In the 1891 English census Janet says she is born Edingburgh which may help as ScotlandsPeople have quite a few Janet Cameron birth registrations 1853 - 1855,

Hi Annette7 I'm a bit confused. I do not have Janets marriage cert. Is the Alexander Cameron you mention her Father  and a mason or is it just a fictitious example? I will get her marriage cert though when the post is more reliable.

A copy of the marriage certificate is on Ancestry:

William Mark Moorcraft  29   Greengrocer    son of William Moorcraft, Butcher
Janet Cameron 26   daughter of Alexander Cameron, Mason
married 1st January 1880 St. Andrews, Camberwell.

Witnesses R. Harvey and Jane Casburn (?hard to read surname)

so if the wedding was 1st January - and she was 26 - does that mean she was definitely born in 1853 ??

I would say so, assuming that she gave her age accurately.

Which censuses have you found her in, and how old did she say she was in each of them?

In the 1861 census in Scotland (FindMyPast transcription) there are 13 Janet Camerons and 5 Jessie Camerons born 1851 to 1855 in a household where there is also an Alexander. None of the 18 was born in Edinburgh. In nine households the Alexander is head of the household, but none is a mason, though one is a quarryman. That one's daughter is aged 10 and all that family were born in Burntisland, Fife.

So could the family have moved to England before 1861? Could she have been lying about her age? Or her birthplace? Could she have been illegitimate and recorded in the census under another surname?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
