tracing ownership of property
« on: Tuesday 12 May 20 05:11 BST (UK) »
At least 3 generations of my Lewis Ancestors owned property partly in or near Merthyr Tydfil.
One of them called  Tair Cupla otherwise Tair lan also Tyr lan.

Is it possible to trace who owned the properties prior to when Lewis Lewis who died 1831 owned it.

His will is National Library of Wales, Will: Lewis Lewis - 1831, Llandaff Wills LL1831-42.

Properties also mentioned are "leasehold messuage tenement and lands called tyr Shag and Gwain Evan Gethin situate in the parish of Gellygare aforesaid now in his own occupation being part of the premises demised to me by the late Baroness Dynevor and John Richards esquire"

leasehold messuage tenement and lands called “Tyr Rhys Morgan”

That should have been prior to when Edward Lewis died circa 1795

National Library of Wales, Will: Edward Lewis - 1795 , Llandaff Wills LL1795-74.

The Tithe apportionemnt lists the Tir Shag of which Waun Evan Gethin was part of, occupied at that by Morgan William , owned by Lord Dynevor & John Mathew Richards Esq https://lleoedd.llyfrgell.cymru/viewer/4552318#?cv=18&h=1558&c=&m=&s=&manifest=https%3A%2F%2Fdamsssl.llgc.org.uk%2Fiiif%2F2.0%2F4552318%2Fmanifest.json&xywh=251%2C767%2C878%2C444

If you go to the following link there are Lewises listed as occupiers but they would be in teh Gelligaer estate (scroll doen the occupiers section on left) https://places.library.wales/search/51.665/-3.288/19?alt=&page=1&refine=&query=tyr%20shag&order=desc&sort=score&rows=100&leaflet-base-layers_92=on

There are records in NLW for Lord Dynevor's Estates (including Gelligaer), but the index doesn't give details of names of farms, though it does list names of people involved in conveyances, amongst them some Lewises, going back to 1600's see https://archifau.llyfrgell.cymru/downloads/dynevor-estate-records.pdf

Haven't found your Tair Cupla (or Tair or Tyr Lan, which sound like must be near a church) yet  though, it can't be in Lord Dynevor estate if it is near Merthyr.
