I think I may have the answer to my original post. Betty's mother had the maiden name of Cruickshank. I have found a marriage record in Scotlands people with a Elizabeth (Betty?) Cruickshank to a Alexander John Duncan (known as George?) in 1949 Springbank. No image available.

Her mother remarried in 1942 recorded as Cruickshank or Johnston..to..coincidently a Duncan james.
He was 67 she was 48! I have the printed image of this record. Thank You David

Trying to work this out 
Have you got her mothers  full name,  and her first marriage to  presumably a Johnson.
There's a couple of possibilities.

Her mothers maiden name was Cruickshank. She married a William Johnston. There were children with that union including Betty. When William died she remarried to James Duncan.

Seperate to that is the marriage between Elizabeth and Alexander. Do not know why she used her mothers maiden name ( Cruickshank) and not Johnston.

Im sure you're right, but I'm not finding a William Johnston marriage to ? Cruikshank. What  year .

Are the ones I posted before  incorrect.
