Baptism in Monmouthshire, possibly in Bedwellty, circa 1804-09
« on: Thursday 14 May 20 08:30 BST (UK) »
I am trying to locate the baptism of James Codrington whose marriage registration in the USA records his place of birth as Monmouthshire.

His year of birth is recorded inconsistently in US censuses, varying from 1804 to 1809.

His occupation was coal miner and other relatives lived in Bedwellty so it is possible he was baptised at St Sannan.

Can you find his baptism?

You mention his relatives.
Can you name them?

I did notice a FRANCIS Codrington born c 1808 Stanton Drew, Somerset living in Badwelty 1851 Census.
His Marriage is on FreeREG 1838 Bedwelty, Father WILLIAM

Francis was Bapt Stanton Drew 25 Dec 1807 to WILLIAM/MARY
He has a Brother JAMES Bapt 21 Jul 1805

Nothing showing in Monmouthshire - either parish or non-conformist. The only one is the one Trish mentions in Somerset.

Yes, Trish, Francis Codrington chr 25 Oct 1807 Stanton Drew SOM s/o William Codrington & Mary per parish records had a brother James Codrington chr 21 Jun 1805 Stanton Drew SOM s/o William Codrington & Mary per parish records.  However this James married Mary Padgett on 9 April 1838 at St Marylebone parish church, Middlesex: James Codrington, of full age, bachelor, coachman, of Gloucester Place s/o William Codrington, constable (deceased).  In the 1841 census, this James is recorded as aged 30-34, b. 1807-11, beer store keeper, living with his wife Mary, aged 35-39 (b. 1802-6) in Albion Terrace, Clapham LND

The marriage registration in 1852 at Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania of James Codrington (mispelled as Codington) says he was born in Monmouthshire, sic England, following the 1850 US Census of Tamaqua, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania in which he is recorded as a miner aged 45 born in England in a household whose occupants had other surnames.  He appears in subsequent US censuses as follows:

1860 Census of Township of Banks, Carbon county, Pennsylvania
James Codrington M age 42 b. 1818 England
Mrs Codrington F age 27 b. 1833 Pennsylvania
Catharine Feese F age 8 b. 1852 Pennsylvania

1870 US Census of Tamaqua, Schuylkill co., Pennsylvania
James Codington M age 66 b. 1804 England
Catharine Codington F age 39 b. 1831 Pennsylvania
Kate Teace F age 19 b. 1851 Pennsylvania

1880 US Census of Tamaqua, Schuylkill co., Pennsylvania
Jas Codrington Self M age 71 mar b. 1809 Eng Retired Builder & coal miner
Cath. Codrington Wife F age 46 mar b. 1834 Pennsylvania
Rich. Smitham Son-in-law M age 38 mar b. 1842 Pennsylvania
Kate Smitham Dau F age 27 single b. 1853 Pennsylvania

It seems unlikely that James who married in 1838 is the same as the James who married in 1852 because of the difference in occupations.

From what I can see William Codrington (who Bapt children Stanton Drew) was a Labourer on Reubens Bapt 1815 and a Farmer on Salaria 1817.

Francis who married Monmouthshire 24 Mar 1838 names his Father as William a Collier ::)

A MARY C married William PARSONS 30 Sep 1845 Stanton, Father WILLIAM a Head Constable
Cant seem to pin her down 1851 for dob/pob, William was a Widower.
She may have been Bapt 25 May 1795

So the Mary born 1795 may be James and his Wife Mary in Clapham in 1841 Census.

Well I tried at least ;D

Thanks for trying, Trish, but more records need to be found in the USA which verify whether or not his place of birth was Monmouthshire as stated on the 1852 marriage registration or somewhere in England as stated in the US censuses, but he was not the James Codrington christened in 1805 in Stanton Drew SOM son of William Codrington.
