JustinL - Ooo thanks I didn't know that. I will have a look at Jewish records. I'd completely forgotten about naturalisation records doh - will look this afternoon.. although my grt grandad didn't bother when he came over from Germany about the same time. He had five children although a daughter Mena Feride seems to be the only one to have an unusual name, there was another daughter whose name was Winifred but spelt Winefride.

Sadly there was no record for John in the naturalisation records. I asked my friend (its her tree I'm helping to research)  and she said there were no rumours or knowledge of Jewish Ancestry but one of her older relatives did look as though they could have had Jewish ancestry.... not sure this helps. I'm going to search for some Jewish ancestry forums to see if anyone on there has come across this name. Thanks for your help.

Hi Vicky,

I may be barking up the wrong tree, but I can't think of any other explanation for an exclusively Jewish middle name line Nahum.

Incidentally, my great-grandfather was a Jew from northern Germany who married an Anglican English woman in 1878. I'm not sure that my grandfather was aware that his own father had been born and raised as a Jew.
