Illegitmate child, is this the father? (Scotland)
« on: Thursday 14 May 20 16:31 BST (UK) »
My great grandfather Donald James Cameron was born to Annie Cameron on December 1st 1909 in Newton Ferintosh (Ross and Cromarty). His birth record has no father and says 'Illegitimate' under his name.

So I ordered his marriage ceritficate in 1933 and his father is down as Hugh Campbell (deceased), and it says Annie Cameron, afterward married to 1. Hugh Campbell, 2. Daniel Airlie

I believe that if his parents weren't married by his birth he would have to be put down as illegitmate, is that correct?
I have been trying to find a record of marriage between Annie Cameron and Hugh Campbell between 1909 and 1933 but to no avail. Not sure what to do! Can I assume Hugh Campbell is his father?

Also, I am confused to as why Donald took his mother's surname of Cameron rather than his father's of Campbells, was that just how it was back then if parents were unmarried?

Hello Weeabie, welcome to Rootschat  :D

Donald certainly appears to be illegitimate from the information that you have given.

Well I can find a marriage of an Annie Cameron to a Daniel Airlie in 1920 in the registration district of Urquhart and Logie Wester.

I put in 1909 to 1940 for dates and that is the only one that appears for an Annie Cameron.  The implication would be that Annie 'married' Hugh before 1920, but did she?  It may be that Donald wanted to hide his illegitimacy and claimed Hugh as his father.

You may wish to consider looking at the Cameron/Airlie marriage to see what that says.

In Scotland, if your parents were unmarried at the time of your birth, but could have legally married at that time, if they marry later on, it makes you legitimate. A new birth certificate can be issued with the father's name added and the date of the parents' subsequent marriage.

If Donald's father, Hugh Campbell had married Annie Cameron later on, she would be described on Donald's marriage certificate as "Annie Airlie, formerly Campbell, M.S. Cameron" or words to that effect. If she is called Annie Cameron without "M.S.", then she didn't marry Donald's father.

I have just viewed that marriage and it says Annie was a spinster but there was what looks like a 3 letter word which is crossed out in front of spinster, the last letter is certainly a 'd' and the first maybe as well but I cannot be certain.

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

Although noted as deceased on Donald's 1933 m/c  -  Did it give an occupation for Hugh Campbell? - Perhaps finding him on the censuses  :-\

I could only find the 1920 Cameron/Airlie marriage entry also  ???

I don't know if this will be of any help a possible son born 1920, have not given full name as have not established if he is deceased

1920 D AIRLIE   084/ 28   Urquhart and Logie Wester

Can you add a snippet of the crossed out word.

The bit that was crossed out on the Annie/Daniel marriage is the start of the word Bachelor.  If you compare with Bachelor on Daniel you will see it is the same.

I agree with that, the only problem was I then thought the minister had written that she was 'Bad' or 'Bid' with only the former making any sense.
