What is the exact wording on the 1815 Birth Entry for John? Sometimes that can give more information as to whether the parents were married or not.

The information on a death certificate is only as good as the knowledge of the person registering the death.

One point to remember is that before 1855 in Scotland many births, marriages and deaths were not recorded in the Parish Registers or they have not survived having been kept in poor conditions.
