Thanks for the explanation about the offences Shaun, makes sense.

Yes we have looked into the John Boulton from Italy, son was John Patrick Bolton, army deserter. 1911 says JB senior had 2 children - crossed out as it was on his line, wife not with him - and have found them in earlier censuses with a daughter Eliza. John Patrick lists an Elizabeth Donnelly sister as his next of kin. No other children present on the earlier censuses. MMN Hickey but no other Bolton or Boulton - Hickey children found. Did get excited when we saw James had a brother John as next of kin, but sadly don’t think they are connected.

Thanks Shaun, hadn’t seen that and not posted by my friend (who had not heard of Rootschat). But obviously part of the family. Will have a read now.

Was he one of the Cardiff station pests?
Evening Express, 25th March 1905
STATION PESTS FINED. Three lads, of about sixteen years of age, named James Bolton, James Sullivan, and Denis Hurley were charged at Cardiff Police-court to-day with trespassing upon the Great Western Railway premises at Cardiff Station and refusing to quit when requested. Mr. Vachell, who appeared on behalf of the Great Western Railway, said there was a. great deal of this trespassing on the station. "We can- not get them away," he said, "they snatch the bags out of the passenger's hands, and if they cannot get them they use abusive language."

The other is dated 13 Jan 1909, aged 20 years, 0 months, born Adamsdown, Cardiff.  This had a brother John initially named as next of kin, but later changed to his wife Catherine.

Any address for this brother?
1901 in Adamsdown what seem to be two Jack Boltons? Both born Leeds. Second hand clothes dealers! Senior is widowed. Younger is enumerated above but surname could be same? Slightly strange perhaps. No James, no one a mason!

Oh, that looks good Jon, puts him in Cardiff earlier than anything else we’d found. That was one of his listed offences in the court record.

Address for brother John, listed as next of kin, was 18 Humphrey St (likely a misspelling of Homfrey St, Cardiff), same as given on James’s first attestation. All the streets named, Humphrey / Homfray, Mary Ann, Rodney, and Tredegar St where James was in 1939, were next to each other (most now long gone).

Here's a story with a Bolton - Hickey link

https://newspapers.library.wales/view/4173924/4173926  - under "Step daughters' clothes"

There's also quite a few stories involving John Bolton, general dealer of 68 Millicent St (sometimes described as a second hand clothes dealer)  his shop seems to be where those accused of robbery have be found by the police to be trying to sell their ill-gotten goods

And look at this I;ve just found : https://newspapers.library.wales/view/4604436/4604439

Under SUSPECTED WHOLESALE THEFTS,

An Italian in Custody. Startling development is anticipated in the case of an Italian who has adopted the name of John Bolton, who stands charged at Cardiff with stealing shoes and breaking and entering a lock-up shop in Working-street and stealing a number of gold and silver watches....

(the website doens;t seemt o be quite working properly today)

Here's the subsequent full trial report - https://newspapers.library.wales/view/4604576/4604579 (third column, "serious charge against a carpenter")

No mention of him being an italian
