As for young Dorothy, I think I will try and contact the archives for the Foundling Hospital which wa run by the SSOJ. The nuns usually have a good handle with the archives of their various institutions so I might be lucky.

1917 Neil Richard Duncan AVERY appears on the Vic E. Roll as a sawyer at Yarram.
 
1919 he is at the Pastoral Hotel Echuca as a Hotel Manager. Also at that address George Charles and Catherine Ada AVERY
