Welcome to Rootschat.

I am sure we can help you on here but some dates and places of birth for Ronald and Rowland are needed.

I am going off line soon so others may help you after you reply.

Trish :)

I personally feel it's better to research your tree first then do your DNA to help with any brick walls etc. otherwise the DNA results are meaningless

I find Ancestry quite a good place to start. I know you have to pay but it may be worth getting a month paid to start with and finding out as much as you can.
You need to start asking your relatives about Grandparents etc to start with put them in and work from there.

Good luck

I haven't broken down any brick walls, but I have confirmed some relationships which I had as "most likely" on my tree. I have also found a lot of new cousins and been able to help them out.

As  trish1120 said, we need more detail of dates and locations. There are a surprising number of Hills with those names in late 19th / early 20th century
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)
Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott

Welcome to Rootschat!

I hope you enjoy researching your family tree.

May I recommend that first you make a few notes of what you DO know.

This would include things like:

Your father's birthday and birth year.
Where you think he might have been born.
Did he have any siblings, your aunts and uncles
Do you know your grandparents' first names, and your grandmother's maiden name?

Any other gossip/rumours/stories -
for example things like
did he have memories of the war, or his parents in the war?
did he tell you where he lived when he was young?

Do you have any older relatives you could talk to?
(I'd be rich if I had a £ for every time someone here has said "I wish I'd asked the questions when I could")

This all sounds really elementary, I know - but the more information you can get together, the more 'clues' you have, the more likely both you (and anyone who helps you) can pin down when you start looking at sites like Ancestry.

I do hope this helps!

I looked up a few things for you to see if I could find anything to start you off.

However, there are a few Rowland Henry Hill entries, and you would need to know where he might be born and which year to pin down which is yours.

I can see - for example - four marriage entries for a Rowland Henry Hill, one in 1908 in Hendon, one in 1908 in Bakewell, and a couple more in the 1890's, one in Crediton and one in Camberwell!

You see the difficulties.

If you give us a few more details - if you know them, or if you can find them out - then we may be able to point you in the right direction.

 :)

You should then have Rowland and Ethel's dates of birth, so you should be able to find their birth registretions
The GRO website will give mother's maiden name
