Brick wall in Yorkshire

Any advice please. My family name Hardy traced back to 1780 Ellerburn near Thornton Dale . Other Hardys   there but connection elusive. Family oral history and local historian Jefferies 1931 would have the family there since 1717. How should I approach solving this riddle ? Thanx

What evidence does 'Jefferies 1931' have, for you to check out?

Could you give us the name and dates of the 1780 near Ellerburn person?

He does not quote his sources other than access to the squires records .of course there is no squire now . Thanx

If they were Tenants of the Lord of the Manor, look in Rentals, Surveys and/or Accounts Books.

If they held/owned Copyhold property, look for transfers in the Court Rolls of the Manor Courts (some Manors Indexed these in Volumes and Books too).

Seems Hill owned few Manors.

Some of these English Manor collections are extensive and it is not unusual to spend a day going through just the Paper Index Volumes of a Collection, to see what other types of records and documents are listed, which might contain information of an ancestor (or place) within a Manor, hidden within an individual document.

Yorkshire Freeholders
Freeholders - look in the Deeds Register Indexes of the particular Riding and then the Registration Books.

Yorkshire Wills
Some left a Will. Only a tiny fraction of Yorkshire Wills are on f m p, the remainder are indexed online, with the Will Books and Wills at the Borthwick, York, (Check if any family Wills were also registered at the PC of Canterbury, on A n c).
