Thanks. Did not realize this was posted!!!!! That census entry is the couple I am following. He is my 4GG.
I have a death record for Edward from Scotland's People. It shows his father as Johnston Darby(sic), and his wife as Janet Darby and it looks like her maiden name may be Downer. I have been unable to find anyone resembling Johnston Darby, nor Janet Darby(Downer).

Had  a quick look at Edward's death cert in 1865 and a Thomas Darby - brother - is listed as the informant on the death cert so looks good Trish

Thankyou. I have bought that certificate and Thomas Darby(sic) is the informant and is a brother of Edward. Edward was 76 years old.
Might the lack of records re his deceased father Johnstone and mother Janet be because they never came to Scotland with Edward and Thomas.
How common would Johnstone be as a forename? I have not seen it before, but it seems quite clearly written on the death record.

Strangely enough when I looked at this earlier the name did not appear in Scotland, however there were a number in England right up to the 20th century.
