Royston marriage 1705
« on: Tuesday 19 May 20 08:51 BST (UK) »
Can anyone please assist with some background to the marriage of Thomas CORNWELL & Mary BAKER at Royston on 9 July 1705 ? They subsequently settled in Thriplow but I am trying to establish his earlier family connections. Many thanks.

I have found baptisms for two children to the couple in Thriplow, Ann 1709 and Margaret 1711. Were these the only children? It is more usual for marriage to take place in bride's parish, so mary may have been from Royston and Thomas from somewhere nearer Thriplow. There is a baptism of a Thomas Cornwell in Hauxton on 12 Feb 1681 s/o Thomas and Elizabeth
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)
Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott

LizzieL,

Many thanks for your response. There were six baptisms in total for children of Thomas & Mary CORNWELL at Thriplow with variations in surname spelling. Sadly, also two infant burials plus those of Thomas & Mary themselves. The baptism at Hauxton is a possibility although I note there was also a burial of Thomas CORNWALL on 12 Mar 1682 which could be the child or the father. I was hoping that the marriage at Royston might offer some clues as to Thomas CORNWELL's parentage. Thanks again for your interest.

Best I can find 8 miles from Royston
Thomas Cornwell
Baptism 12 Feb 1681
Hauxton, Cambridgeshire
Father:Thomas Cornwell
Mother:Elizabeth

No births as I can see on A….y in Herfordshire. Others in Essex & London

Plus two Thomas Cornell near Saffron Walden Essex and others more distant in Essex.

So not sure if this helps?

Colin,

It does help if only to confirm that I'm not missing something. Many thanks for your time/trouble.

13 Apr 1679 Fowlmere Thomas Cornmill s/o Throtten and Margaret. Transcript so "we" in poor or faded handwriting could look like "mi".

LizzieL,

Many thanks for your further input, I am most grateful. The Fowlmere Thomas (CORNHILL?) is certainly another possibility I had not considered. If I am to resolve this it will be from the original Royston marriage register entry hopefully providing some clue as to Thomas' origins. Thanks again.

FindMyPast has images of Hertfordshire marriages. The image for their marriage says

Thomas Cornwell & Mary Baker Banns July 9
Top of section: married in Royston Anno Domini 1705
Bottom of Section: Danl Draper Vicar
Saml Candler , Joseph Pitcher   Churchwardens

If you use the indexed Hertfordshire marriage index it only starts at 1754. You have to browse the composite register (pre splitting of marriages into separate register).

None of the records in the register at this time state what parish the bride and groom came from or whether they were single or widowed. The vicar was just recording the minimum and not too neatly at that.
