Looking for William and Grace March
« on: Tuesday 19 May 20 16:21 BST (UK) »
Hello. I wonder does anybody have access to the registers of Bury, Chichester, Sussex?

In the 1841 census I have a William (70 yrs) and Grace (75 yrs) March living in that village. Grace had died by 1851 but I have William in that census and also 1861. In the latter census he is entered as "Father in Law" but I can't find just what the link is.

What I would like to find, is there a baptism of William in that parish around 1770 and a marriage to Grace either in that parish or nearby? Also are there any children born to William and Grace in Bury parish? There are certainly March families in the various censuses.

My connection to William??  I am trying to connect him with a William March, a soldier in the Sussex Light Dragoons who married Grace Burfett in 1796, St Sidwell, Exeter. I also am trying to link William with the William March, Soldier and his wife Grace who had a child, Maria baptised in Beverley, Yorks 1799. I know quite vague connections but mainly trying to eliminate people.

Any thoughts much appreciated, this family has been bugging me for years and coming back to it again I am not getting much further.

Birth registration for Henry Sheppard son of William & Ann who William March is with in 1861.  It looks as though Ann is William March's daughter

Baptisms at Bury:
William March 10/9/1769 to William & Martha March
William March 22/11/1772 to William & Martha March
Burials at Bury
William March 15/10/1769

Can't readily see a marriage of William to Grace though.

Thanks to everyone for their replies. Most interestingly is the burial of Maria March in 1801. This would indicate that this is a different family to "mine" as "my" Mary/Maria goes on to marry in 1835 in Yorkshire.

At least I think I can now dismiss this William & Grace in Sussex.

Back to the drawing board.

Many thanks
