Stafford Assizes 19/07/1855
« on: Wednesday 20 May 20 13:52 BST (UK) »
Hello,

The following three juvenile offenders were each sentenced to 4 years Penal Servitude at the Stafford Assizes on 19/07/1855 and were all subsequently discharged on 18/07/1859........they appear not to have re-offended at any stage in the future but, then, and the reason for this posting is, after that date I can find no trace of them anyway.      I should add that all three had been summarily convicted several times in Liverpool prior to 1855.   Possibly someone can kindly discover them after 1859.

The three are:

(1):   Edward FARRELL, born probably 1841 in Ireland (Dublin?): Mother, Mrs Jane FARRELL residing in 1855 in Park Lane, Liverpool.

(2):   James McCann (alias Christopher LAWLER), born probably 1841 in Ireland (Dublin?):  Father, James McCann no address available;

(3):   Michael MORTIMER (alias Martin HISHMAN), born probably 1840 in Ireland (Dublin?):  Father, Michael MORTIMER no address available.

Dublin is quoted on the understanding that information given at their trial revealed that all three had been convicted and gaoled between 4 and 6 years ago in Dublin.

In anticipation........ ??? ::)

Went to post my own query in Staffordshire and saw this so am now sidetracked - as happens!

An Edward FARRELL b Roscommon, age 49 was sent to prison for 8 days, or pay 21/2 for being drunk and disorderly at Sheffield on 29 May 1890 (i think he took the sentence).
He had a ruputured right side, (hernia?)  and a blue cut on his right cheek
and was 5ft 2.

Thank you for your posts which certainly do seem very appropriate, especially as they open up other research avenues.

I shall now look at the possibilities.
