If he was a foundling it's possible he was just given the name John Murray

If you use Google - it gives info on foundlings and of the foundling hospitals

Just looking at a Southwark Workhouse entry for a John Murray aged 3 admitted 2.6.1858.

Deserted by mother 1.6.1858 and brought in by a Louisa Gordon or Cordon of 6 Disney St

Nothing else at the moment

Thanks Rosie - can’t find anything else on him.

Assuming he was illegitimate - GRO maiden name search has no births in the London area without a mmn

The other possibilities are that his father died & mother was destitute??
He was born somewhere other than London but abandoned there?

There is another Workhouse record that may be worth looking at for Lambeth, no evidence they are linked to each other

Admitted 16 January 1854 - Charlotte Murray age 19

17 January 1854 Murray, Male child born

Both discharged 4 Feb 1854 - No mention as to where to.

Just in case he was apprenticed from the Foundling Hospital (records at the London Metropolitan Archives)
