Morris 8?

It's a much better match on the radiator shell, ainslie.  Photos attached.

The clincher - in the OP's photo, the chrome side of the radiator shell is much deeper at the bottom than the top.

Here is a Morris 8.

I think it’s i Morris 8, I passed my test in an identical one, we had left the battery on charge all day,
and warmed it up beforehand, and by some miracle it started on the starter, I did not have to use the starting handle.

I definitely  think it’s a Morris 8.

Thank you all, especially horselydown86, stanmapstone and ainslie - the images and your explanations are really helpful. My husband will be interested too, but for me it was a case of accurately labelling the photos. The man was my father, Frank aka Brewin (hence 'brewins girl) and there's another one with my mother standing alongside it, where the registration is visible. My dad was teaching her to drive.

It's quite a while since I used a starting handle in anger too.

There's a very important thing when using one. Your thumb should wrap around it in the same direction as your fingers. Definitely not a case for "opposable thumb".

This means that should the engine "kick back" when starting, you don't end up with a broken thumb.

I got bruised once, and lessons learned by experience stick with you.

My Daimler has a starting handle, but luckily I've always been able to use the electric starter. There's a lot of metal to get moving with only a puny human arm.

Looking at the tax disc, I would date the photo to 1938-1940.

The diagonal colour band (with cut-outs for vehicle details) next appeared in 1950, and the car looks too new for then.

The photo was taken in 1936 andrewalston, so much as I appreciate your help, I'm afraid you're out by at least two years. Thanks anyway, and it'll be interesting to look at the link you posted.
