Missing detail on death cert
« on: Thursday 21 May 20 15:53 BST (UK) »
1853 certificate of  92 year old Martha Rose shows her as 'widow of.......Rose labourer'. No Christian name for him.  He (John) had died aged 91 a few years earlier.

Has anyone else found a detail missing from a certificate?

Yes I would also suggest the person registering the death probably just knew she was a widow but not who her husband had been.

Both informants are unknown to me.......at the moment! Next job is to research them to see if they are extended family or just neighbours.

Perhaps she never spoke of him. Cause of death is just 'old age' so perhaps her memory had failed.

The informants may only have known him as Mr Rose - or perhaps never known him at all, and deduced that there'd been a Mr Rose from the fact that she was Mrs.

not as misleading as one I have where a death registered by a much younger half brother gives my gggrandmother as widow of George when she was widow of Thomas. Only worked it out by sheer chance when I spotted her remarriage in the parish register.

I have one similar to this, my 4x Gr grandmother was registered as the widow of William Message rather than Richard, latter having been transported to Australia decades before.  I thought for years I had the wrong person’s cert until I matched her rural address on the certificate to the last census she was recorded on.

Looking back at census records it would appear that the couple did not move far from their home village and the names are neighbours.
