Christopher Bousfield (circa 1800)
« on: Friday 22 May 20 07:41 BST (UK) »
I have been researching this branch of my family for more than 4 years now, without success. At first, I didn't think my Christopher Bousfield was from Westmorand and tried to find him in London, but I had no success at all. I have paid subscriptions to several genealogy websites and have analyzed every Bousfield family in London and still could not find him, so now I would like to explore Westmorland in depth. I already searched for him on a few of the websites, but due to the lack of complete information on the websites and several Christopher Bousfields, could not located him. Thank you for any help or tip you might be able to give it to me. Here is what I know:

The only record I have is a marriage bann, between Christopher Bousfield and Eleanor Curtis published at St. Brides Church on Fleet Street, London, in 1825. There are no records of a Christopher Bousfield being in London before that, what leads me to believe he was born someplace else, most probably in Westmorland.

Christopher and Ellenor migrated to South America sometime between 1825 and 1830. Their first daughter was born in Uruguay in 1830, and their son, Christopher Bousfield Junior, in Brazil a few years later. So it can't be a Christopher Bousfield that has records in England after 1830.

Christopher was a successful businessman, he was the founder of a wood-mill in Brazil and had several other business, what leads me to believe he was somewhat educated. He had American investors as his partners on the wood-mill.

The Bousfield family today has many members and continues to live in Brazil, mostly, with a few exceptions, like me (I moved to the U.S. 20 years ago and now I am on a work assignment in Dubai for a few years).

Thank you, this group is my last hope.

Welcome to rootschat, Silvia

Complete sideways step.

Any information on any other Bousfields getting married in the same church around the same time?

Have you got the Marriage record or just the Banns - names of witnesses?

How sure are you on his age, also why Westmoreland?
There is this  birth, just to consider
Chris.  Bousfield  Birth year  1790   Birth place   -
Baptism year  1791    Baptism date   06 Mar 1791  Place  Muker  Yorkshire
Father's name Tho. Bousfield   Mother's first name  Hannah.  Mother's last name-
Record set   England Births & Baptisms 1538-1975

Yorkshire baptisms give extra information:
Father is a collier, of Kings Pitt House, Bowes. He was born Sep. 28, 1790.
Unlikely with a miner for a father, but just to widen search.

Thank you. I know his first marriage was in 1825 and that he was a bachelor. I figured he would be around 20-25, but he could have been older.

Why Westmorland: having practically extinguished the odds that he was born in London, I looked for areas where the name Bousfield was common. But more than that, Christopher seems to be a name used very often on the family, at least on the family he built in Brazil. Almost every single male, to this day, has Christopher as a first or middle name, so I thought this could have been a tradition Christopher brought with him from his family in England And there are a few Christopher Bousfield registered in Westmorland, so it made sense to search there.

I've looked at the banns record and there is no indication that the marriage ever took place. Other entries in the book are marked "M" but not that one.

I know... that is really weird, I am not sure what happened there. All I know is that they had a child together when in Uruguay (1830) and were together for the rest of their lives.

Thank you. This Christopher lived in England for his whole life, though (had 7 children and died there in 1851):

Born in Bowes, Yorkshire, England on 28 Sept 1790 to Thomas Bousfield and Hannah Dickinson. Christopher Bousfield had 7 children. He passed away on 19.9.1851 in Brough.
