Charles Brice McGregor :

Hi All…

I’d like to ask a favour.  Is there anyone out there who can help verify Charles Brice McGregor’s wife and eventually one child. 
McGregor has already been mentioned on RootsChat by myself a few years back but at the time, I was not creating his tree. 

Brice, as he called himself (not Charles) was a 3rd Foot Guards veteran from Waterloo before becoming a Yeoman of the Guard, then on to publican/Freemason for the three Regiments of Foot Guards at Horse Guards, Whitehall.

According to the Waterloo Roll Call, he was a native of Argyleshire, but when he enlisted in 1799, he put his birthplace and date down as Glasgow 24th June 1782. (perhaps an orphan)

Enlisted in Edinburgh by 1800 and was aged 18 years old. (Brown hair / Grey eyes / Fresh complexion / 5ft 9in / Labourer)  Discharged in 1823 in London. (“worn out” and received "a handsome pension")  After 1821, appointment Yeoman of the Guard.  1823 Suttling House (tavern) – Horse Guards.  Free Masonry Lodge of United Strength, No.228 - Freemasons' Hall, 60 Great Queen Street, London.
Died 27 November 1846.

I have his wife as Elizabeth McGheill (abt1785 - ? - ..., possibly Irish) and with a son called Frederick James McGregor.  Born abt1821 at Windsor, which would tally well with the Guards or Yeoman.  Frederick’s wife could have been Harriet Frances Davenport.

Can anyone confirm Elizabeth McGheill and son Frederick ?

Two trees on A….y note Elizabeth as McGheill  but I can find no birth or marriage to confirm.

1841 – Westminster. From the description I guess this is them?

Sadly marriage records there on A…..y end in 1834 but the marriage certificate might help?

Possible death for Elizabeth certificate might help but nothing for Brice after 1841?

Took a look at the original. Ancestry is wrong (no surprise there).

I read it as
F J M'Gregor, 20, surgeon, not born in county
Harriet do, 20, born in county
Harriet E do, 3 months, born in county
Mary A smith, 12, F S, not born in county

Hi…  Thanks to both of you. 

I’ve already started an Ancestry tree for Brice but before accepting their ‘hints,’ I wanted to have his wife verified.  Ten hints are awaiting with three of them being obviously false, but that’s normal because I’ve not added enough info. 
Although it’s not necessary, I would like to find where he was born in Argyllshire.  In doing so and having his roots well established, that should help the search-engine.

In fact, I’m writing a book about my Regiment the Scots Guards (‘3rd Regiment of Foot Guards’) and the content revolves around our famous four ‘UK-Musketeers.’ (one of them had a halberd…, half-pike)  All four were on the same 1815 Company Returns for the 2nd Battalion’s Light Company, with one of the four called Mathew Clay.  Matthew’s descendent is a lady called Christine Dabbs and she has already been filmed with Sean Bean in relation to the Waterloo battle. 
Because of it, I’m now looking for a second descendent for Brice McGregor.
(The other two are just as important…, Ralph Fraser, the most decorated soldier in the British Army in 1816 plus Robert Gann, Wellington’s future servant at London N°1)
The book should be published in September. 

However; one step at a time !  Brice !

Sorry, but there’s absolutely no sense having a surgeon (especially a foreigner) in Brice’s descendants.   If Brice’s son was actually Frederick, then records have him as potato merchant. (and born in Windsor)

Please note…, I’ve already contacted Joan Habluetzel Machovina via Facebook and the family is simply not interested. (three contacts with them over the past six months and no reply) 
In the meantime, ‘her Frederick’ tree has an unknown father. (she knows nothing about Brice)

Lol…, over the years, McGregor’s first name has been a subject of interest.
Bruce, Brice and many others…  However, following his death, the Freemasons offered his wife a broach.  On which is engraved Brice.
