From your other post, it seems that the clerk may have exaggerated by mentioning bigamy. I had a look in a 1709 handbook for ministers here to see if there was a wider definition of the crime, but there isn't. In Scotland at the time the punishment for bigamy was "Confiscation of all their Moveables, Warding of their Persons for Year and Day, and longer during the Queens Will, and as infamous never to bruik Office, Honour, Dignity, or Benefice in time coming". It was punished in the same way as perjury, because it was a breach of the oath taken at the first marriage.
