Birth certificate prior to formal adoption
« on: Sunday 24 May 20 11:17 BST (UK) »
Hi,

we're on the hunt for more information about my husband's biological grandfather, we know his name (we think) and we know that my mother in law was formally adopted by her mother's husband at some point. We have a copy of her birth certificate (issued to her in 2004as she did not have a copy of the original) which notes the adoption on it. The certificate does not list her biological father's name. My questions are, would the original birth certificate give more information, or is it pointless to try and hunt it down? would her biological father have had to give consent for the adoption? She was born in 1946 and passed away in 2016.
Many thanks

sorry to say - but her biological father might not of even known he was a father - born 1946 - the biggest year of births - WAR finished 9 months before - VE Day  in MAY 1945 - and War ended 1st September 1945 - so a HUGE amount of babies were born - and many many many were adopted - father unknown - sorry but it is a fact  :(

Thank you for your response. In this case we know that he did know that she had a baby and marriage was planned. Unfortunately there was a difference in class and the families prevented this. We know that they were still in touch at the time of the birth and after for a short while also. (She then married another man who went on to formally adopt my mother in law, hence the question re the original birth certificate)

There is no original certificate - only the register entry.

A certificate is a a copy of whatever is on the entry at the time it is produced. If there is no father's name on the certificate you have, there won't be one on the register.

The best chance of finding anything else maybe to apply for access to any adoption records that were kept. They can sometimes name the "putative father".

Close relatives of adopted people can, in certain circumstances, apply for access even when the adopted person has died.
