John Armitage death record approx between 1913 and 1916
« on: Monday 25 May 20 00:02 BST (UK) »
Hi can anyone help. I am looking for the death record of my great Grandad John Armitage. Originally of Kilkenny, Ireland approx 1862. He married my great Grandma in Leeds, Laura Jane Croft, in 1895.

The 1911 census has him living at 4 Paleys Buildings, Leeds.

I have been told by family that he was killed in a quarry accident. My Great Grandma the. remarried in
The second quarter of 1917. His youngest daughter was born in 1913  So I assume his death is between 1913-1916.

The records I have found show 4 John Armitage deaths in 1913 and 1914, 3 in Leeds and one in Worley but none of the ages match. Is there a way to find which one is my great Grandads without ordering all the death certificates?

Thanks in advance.

There is a John Armitage buried in Leeds Catholic Cemetery at Killingbeck 20th May 1914. Plot BA#241.

John's age is given as 54 so not too far out.

You say he was killed in an accident. This John died on 16th May 1914 in Leeds Union Infirmary, might be worth checking a death certificate.

Hi

If he died in an accident he would have had an inquest so could be in the local papers.

I don t think this is your man , his age is wrong and has a middle name, but a report of an accident at Newgate Quarry ( I think near Holmfirth) . He was an inmate in the Deanhouse workhouse on and off.
Huddersfield Daily Examiner 25th July 1916
John William Armitage (Blind Johnny) ,aged 48 was found floating in the quarry. No mention of address or family.

I can't find anything on the quarry or the inmates at Deanhouse  :-\  I am not sure this age would be right either though, born 1862 and died 1916 would make him closer to 54 although I am learning to take ages with a pinch of salt.

I have found he had a brother called William Armitage that is named on the census in 1901 living with him aged 14 and that he was born in Leeds.

I dont think he was your John, the article mentioned he had been in and out of Deanhouse Workhouse since 1892, unless he was recently blind then that would have been noted on the 1911 census.
Just co incidence I would think.
Added  definately not him John William is in the workhouse in 1911 and was noted as blind.

Thanks for that Cathy. Thought there was a bit of scandal then.

I have finally received the death certificate back and it looks like the John Armitage buried in Killingbeck is in fact my great Grandad.  The death certificate showed accidental death due to an accident in a timber yard, not a quarry as I had thought, but it seems so similar that I am assuming it is the right man.  Thanks for all your help
