seem to be coming to a dead end
« on: Monday 25 May 20 00:33 BST (UK) »
hi all im quite new to this so may have missed something. I am searching the family tree of my father in law who was adopted (unofficially as he had tb) he can find his mother - norma valentine b-est 1925 and d-1948 she was at st margarets house (a mother and child home) on Camden road, st pancras she is registered on the electrol roll in 1946 as being living there and registered as death at st pancras we believe she died of tb. we cannot find any records of his father and unfortunately don't know his name and he also had a older sister, but he cannot remember her name. we don't seem to be able to find any records for this home any help at all would be really appreciated
his details are Daniel valentine (unofficially bowman) born 1946 in islington

Hi, and welcome to Roots chat.

If your father-in-law is still alive, the Moderator will probably remove his details from your post.

Is it your private tree on Ancestry (k bowman family tree)?  The birth date of Norma is given as 1929, which would appear to be correct, as there is not a birth in England & Wales for a Norma Valentine in 1925.

Norma Valentine
Born June 1929 Manchester North

Do you know where Norma was in 1944 & 1945?  There are several births with mmn Valentine during those years in the following places:-
Brighton
Bedford
Nottingham
Wrexham
Blackpool
Oldham

I can't find any other information on the mother and baby home I'm afraid.

McLeod, McKean, Hepburn (Fife)
McGowan, Gowan (Dumfriesshire, Ireland)
Nelson, McKean (Lanarkshire)
McKean, Mulgrew (Lethbridge, Alberta)
Boswell, Plumb, Lyon, Stokes, Pemberton, Crawford, Threadgold (Cheshire)
Tierney (Scotland/Ireland)

With Norma being an unmarried mother it can be very difficult to get the father's name

Norma was buried 3rd Feb 1948 in Camden

1939 London electoral register she's at 18 Clarendon Road, Kensington

Looking at the 1939 register - it goes from 14 Clarendon Road, 2 redacted entries then number 18 Clarendon Road - every other even numbered house is in order

Can't see a birth for a Norma Valentine in 1925 though - closest in England seems to 1929 in Manchester

If that is her on electoral rolls, she must have been born before 1916.

Hi thank you these are all great. Yes my that is my family tree on ancestry feel free to have a browse. I can find my family quite far back which I was shocked at as my mother died young and didn’t really know my family but it’s the in-laws after his parents there is not much information. It was more my father in law that is so intriguing. Still getting the hang of trying to look everyone up. It’s giving me something to do on my days off during lockdown but becoming quite obsessed with looking haha.

The Norma at 18 Clarendon Road was the wife of a Herbert Unwin Valentine (marr.1936) so not the Norma Valentine in question.

I can’t believe how amazing you all are we have been looking on and off for years and just got a name. And that was on Daniels birth certificate (father is unknown) but his adopted parents told him his father was a french candadian that was over in the war. I think he may be a lost cause with no name etc.
