Catholic baptism records - certainly the old ones - are really helpful in that they give the mother’s maiden name, but they don’t list grandparents - unless they happened to be the godparents.

This is all very interesting! I have found transcripts of the marriage between John Power and Bridget Sparling, as well as the baptisms of 6 of the children, (all in Latin!) in the Bristol church records. The marriage gives both his and her parents names, so another step forward if I can definitely establish that Mary Power's parents were John and Bridget. Highly likely, I think, given that the 2 families lived next door to each other in 1911. I will attempt to contact the Grangetown church. Thankyou!
