Rose Hannow nee Lagan
« on: Monday 25 May 20 21:55 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am looking for information on my GG Grandfathers sister.

She was born Rose Lagan Born 23/09/1872 in Portsmouth England although she was Northern Irish. Her father James Lagan was in the army, 104th foot. Her mother is Catherine Dowds. Both parents are Irish.

She was married on 15/12/1902 to a James Hannah (although marriage cert says Hannow I am confident Hannah is correct).

They both worked in the Calico print works alongside my GG grandfather John Robert Lagan, born in 1875 in Dover, again he was Irish.

My was living in and around Rasharkin/Ballymoney area in the North of Ireland around the 1880s and 1890s.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards

Mark

Have you found her in any 1901 or 1911 censuses?  If so, in which country?

Where was the marriage?

Hi,

Whoops, I should have said, she was married in Lennoxtown Scotland where my GG grandfather (her brother) was at the time and subsequently his family and mine settled not too far away in Cumernauld and Lanarkshire area.

As we are RC the marriage certificate is in Latin and has her name is Rosinam but I have her baptismal record in Portsmouth. I found this as I searched of Lagans in Portsmouth on Find my Past as it tied in with my GGG army regiments movements, 104th foot.

I have found her in no census in Scotland or Ireland. My guess is this is due her Father being in the Army and whole family moving around in barracks.

I have also searched for her husband James and his family and cant find anything.

Regards

Mark

Was her husband also in the Army?  If not - it’s unlikely she would have moved around with her father.

What do you know about James Hannah?  How old was he and who were his parents

Are you sure surname is Hannah as Scotlands People show it as Shannon

Thank so much, find my past has it as Hannow but when I looked at the original document the I thought I thought that it might have been wrong.

The only information that I have on the Husband is from the marriage certificate. Hector was the Father and Elizabeth Mcneil was the Mother.

My hope is that by finding information on Rose that I can piece more information together about her Father James.

I know that Rose and my GG Grandfather John Robert Lagan moved around with his Fathers regiment in the 1870's as Rose was born in Portsmount and then John was born in Dover and the 104th foot were located there at that time.

Rose was born in 1872 so she would have been 39 in 1911.

One other thing that I have noticed, is that although Lagan is a rare name outside Antrim in Northern Ireland there were a lot in England in the second half of the 19th century, I think mainly due to the Potato famine migration and most of them are called James, John, Rose and Catherine so it is bit of a nightmare.
