I've looked for the information on John Mitchell in the records office, I have been through all the church records for Whitehaven:  Christchurch; Holy Trinity; St James and St Nicholas, and can't locate John Mitchell with a father of Thomas also tried egremont

Can you tell me what religion John was, it may be I couldn't see the wood for trees and have missed it, but don't think so.

I will have another look, haven't tried St Bees, but do you have any more information

Hi Andrew,

I have never come across a religion for John.

The info I have is that he was born 8 Jan 1805 in Whitehaven. That his father was Thomas. He immigrated to Australia in 1842 on the Marchioness of Bute and he died in New South Wales on the 20th September 1878.

Yesterday, I decided to trawl through Family Search to get some clues and came up with a listing of a John Mitchell b- 8 Jan 1805 c- 27 Jan 1805 St James. To parents JOHN and ELIZABETH.

I could find no other children or marriage of a John and Elizabeth on the IGI. But was suprised when I found an THOMAS and ELIZABETH with 8 children all christened in St James or St Nicholas (one listed as Mitchel). Even more intresting is that they have a "gap" between a child born 1796 and one born 1808. A "gap" in which John could fill.

What is the easiest way to check this out? Is it possible to get John's christning and see if the details of Elizabeth his mother match Elizabeth the mother of the others??

Thanks again so much for looking, and sorry if I have sent you on a wild goose chase.
Holly

Hi Andrew, just back from my hollies and saw your post. I have been looking for John Whitfield (C1803 ish) for many years now. He was a clogger and lived in either Queen st or New Town in Whitehaven. I can't find him online in the 1851 census but part of it is missing. Would you be able to look at the records office for me.By then he was re-married to Jane. What I am really looking for is his place of birth if that detail is on the census by then. Many thanks Cass
