identifying a farm and lands in St. Ninians
« on: Tuesday 26 May 20 04:46 BST (UK) »
Good day!

I'm reviewing the will of Robert Meiklejohn and it appears his father (also Robert) constructed a house/farm on lands described as, I think:

Easterhouse in the stowland part of the mains of Chartershall called Sappieside

I'm not sure and am looking for help trying to figure out where this is, what constituted the estate/lands, and if there's any remnants of this today? Aswell a map if possible?
Crawford, Smith, Marr, Newton, McClement, and more :)

Very kind Skoosh but it doesn't really show the size of the estate although a first link I posted does include some of the place names.    Looks like the house is still there https://bdphq.com/satassets/docs/brochure_92ad4bf1b857603c75613540bd8d6fb1_1582904915.pdf

Stirling Observer, 9 Sep 1847

THE UNITED HORTICULTURAL SOCIETIES OF THE PARISH OF ST. NINIANS
The first meeting was held in the Hall, Bannockburn, on Saturday the 28th ult. when the following articles were competed for, and premiums awarded, viz:-
.........................
Gooseberries, best 12 - 1st John Dougal, St Ninians; 2nd John Meiklejohn, Sappieside
Apples, best 4 - 1st John Meiklejohn; .......
..........................
Pansies, best 12 varieties - 1st Robert Scotland; 2nd James Jenkin; 3rd John Meiklejohn
....................................

The judges were .......... - whose decisions gave entire satisfaction (that would be a first)

On Kay's larger scale map I reckon I can see the trees/bushes they were grown on (pansies excepted, of course). By coincidence, one of today's jobs on the allotment is to protect my gooseberries but, sadly, no prizewinners there.

Chattershall was the property of Sir Alexander Maitland.  If you really want to know how big it was then you need to visit (when they reopen), the NRS in Edinburgh who have a detailed maps. Sappiside from the side-by-side map Kay provided would be about 3+ acres.

This is brilliant - thank you all so much.

Kay - the maps are excellent; especially the side by side.

So would Easterhouse be the building at Sappieside? Would Sappieside be the whole farm's name?

In the first image Robert Meiklejohn's will refers to Gateside, might that reference the property to the east of Sappieside?

I think that Sappieside is the name of the property he was leaving to his family and Gateside is the property shown on the map.   https://maps.nls.uk/view/74984202#zoom=4&lat=3986&lon=8727&layers=BT

As to Easter House - Could that refer to this property being the eastern house?  However I am not a legal expert :-\     It does appear that he has left different parts of the property to his wife and two sons
