Philip and James Cowan, Drumgooland.
« on: Tuesday 26 May 20 18:28 BST (UK) »
Seeking any help/information on James Cowan b. 1814, son of Philip and possibly in County Down. James married an Elizabeth Broadbent in Liverpool in 1842 and worked as a soap cutter. He may have had an older brother, John, but he might have been an uncle. I,m afraid that is about all I've got.!

Where did you get the name Drumgooland from?

It's both a civil parish halfway between Banbridge and Newcastle in Co Down
https://www.townlands.ie/down/drumgooland/
and a townland west of Downpatrick.

My information on Drumgooland has come third-hand from a distant relative, so, sorry, I cannot verify the source. The name Ballymaginaghy has also come to light, and I believe this is a part of the Co. Down Drumgooland. I can add that I have a birth date of c.1793 for John Cowan. It would just be nice to find my Irish roots. cheers.

There are three Cowans - Hugh, James, and John - listed under Ballymaginaghy in the Tithe Applotment Books (1829):
http://www.irishgenealogyhub.com/down/tithe-applotment-books/drumgooland-parish.php

No sign of any Cowan's in that townland in Griffith's Valuation (print date of 1863 for the more general area), but there is a Michael 'Coen' there and several Cowans - Margaret, Felix, John, Charles and Patrick - to the immediate south in the neighbouring townland of Ballymagreehan.

You could have a look around the following website, but for the era you are researching, the pickings are slim:
https://www.rosdavies.com/index.html

Catholic baptisms, marriages and funerals covering Ballymaginaghy and surrounding area are only available from 1832/3 at the following link, but you might find something that resonates:
https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0448

(BTW, I only glanced at these registers and noticed funerals in the early 1830s for a Cowan and a couple of Coens in Ballymaginaghy... so Cowan and Coen may well have been interchangeable for that time and place.)

Here's Ballymaginaghy townland on the edge of the lovely Castlewellan Forest Park.

....and Ballymagreehan townland just to the west of Castlewellan.

as gaffy suggested Ros Davies might well have more information for you in geography terms she has a map of Drumgooland  townlands
have you seen http://www.rosdavies.com/SURNAMES/C/Cowan.htm
James   COWAN   .   Drumgooland   farmed in Magheramayo in 1803   LDR
James   COWAN   .   Drumgooland   of Ballymagenaghy; funeral held 24 Aug 1849 aged 70 at Drumgooland Lower Catholic Church   PR

she is quoting Drumgooland Lower Catholic Church   PR look that up under her church section and you should find a list of surviving records

My 3*great grandmother is also a Cowan from Drumgooland. She was Bridget Cowan, born approx. 1808, and died 27 Dec 1896

She married Dennis Higgins in Drumgooland Upper on 1st March 1834 and they had 8 children. The lived in Ballymagreehan - which borders Ballymaginaghy

http://rosdavies.com/MAPS/DrumgoolandTownlands.htm

Some of the children, moved to North England, others remained local.

Me and my dad have both done DNA tests on ancestry - in case we have a connection
