Hello,
It is a bit laborious But you just have to go through births for Allen (no first name) and Mullingar.

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp

Civil records

Last name

Registration district

You can choose birth/marriage/death and years if you want

Search

Solve captcha

Enter your name and tick the box

You can refine the search then if you want - not choosing gives  me 460 names, so it would be best then to refine to births within a group of years etc.  Then you just have to trawl through for those with the right parents.

When you have names, you can look for any marriages or deaths.

I have now found 15 of the 21 children of Peter and Ann Allen; the remaining 6 elude me.

I have Ann's father, Thomas Cowen, Blacksmith in Mullingar and his death 13 April 1884. Yet I can't find his birth or marriage in order to find Ann's mother's name and hopefully then Ann's birth (around 1864 as she died 4 August 1917 age 53).

Finally I'd like to understand why Ann's husband, Peter was in the Mullingar Workhouse when he died age 65 on 10 March 1900 as the 1901 census shows her as Head of a Household and Washerwoman.

Any pointers greatfully received  ;D

Marriage of PETER ALLEN and ANNE COWEN on 21 August 1871 so Anne would have been 7 when she married ???

There is a birth for Anne Cowan, 15th May 1853, Mullingar parish, with parents Thomas Cowan and Mary Masterson. The sponsors are Thomas Byrne and Mary Masterson.

Also there is Mary baptised September 23rd 1855 to the same parents with sponsors Richard Cowan and Margaret Masterson.

This may not be your family though.

There is a death in 1866 for Mary Cowan, 44 yrs, Mullingar but not yet online only in indexes.
Also Mary Cowen, 52 yrs in 1869.

With regard to Peter’s death in the workhouse, it might be that he was being nursed there rather than living there.  :-\

ah yes I hadn't thought of that, thanks very much Heywood.  So I'm just missing Peter Allen's birth around 1835.

In my searches for the 21 children, I have two deaths which I think relate to their children however I can't find their births having scrolled through all of the records. Can you offer any suggestions as to where I can find them to prove they are part of the family?

Helena Allen died of convulsions age 1 and a half on 1st July 1880, daug of Ann Allen and a labourer (who I am hoping is Peter Allen but his name isn't stated).

Christopher Allen died 13 September 1878, (can't read cause - see snip attached), age 7, father present at death Peter Allen

Probably a stupid question but when a death cert starts N medical attendant, do they take cause of death from parent? No official involved?

Many thanks as ever
