Updating my question about my father John Sydney Swift. He was born in Cork District Hospital in Ireland on 8th December 1917 to Frances Gertrude Swift aged 19 who was unmarried.Present at the birth was Mary Dwyer from the Cork Union. We only know her name and year of birth which was 1898. We believe she was sent there to have her baby but the story was she was involved with an officer in the army. We assume that was a cover up so as not to embarrass the family and we were given to understand that they didn't return to the UK until John  was about 3 yrs old. They then lived with members of her family. Would be grateful for information as my father's ancestry is a mystery. Thank you

His mother was Frances Walker. She later changed her name by Statutory Declaration to Frances Gertrude Swift.

Thank you so much Sarah for merging my two posts. I tried but couldn't do it X

Also thank you KG for the link to the register with my fathers birth on. Didn't know anything about the change of name by his mother. X

It looks like she could have had her baby under an assumed name and it was changed 19.03.1920 almost three years after John Sydney's birth and perhaps just before she was taking him back too England

I don’t think this will help at all, sorry.

Records seem to indicate that Frances Gertrude was the daughter of William  and Elizabeth.

Birth 1898 Warrington March quarter vol 8c pg 194  mmn Pimblett

You write
“We believe she was sent there to have her baby but the story was she was involved with an officer in the army.“

Why would she be sent to Cork to have her baby? Do the family have Irish connections? I have only looked at her parents in 1901 who were both born in Lancashire.

I wonder if she went there, with the soldier, and maybe the name Walker is connected to him?
