Arthur (also known as Dick) Crook WW2 enquiry
« on: Wednesday 27 May 20 22:38 BST (UK) »
Hi all
I've asked similar questions before but I was wondering if anyone has any new ideas for me. I am trying to find out about my late Great Uncle Arthur Crook during WW2. He lived in Rushford near Thetford during the war. He was born in 1896 and signed up to serve in WW1 in 1914/15. However he was discharged after 10 days as medically unfit for service. As far as I know he worked on the land and may have been a game-keeper or may have worked on a farm. His address was The Old Poultry Farm Rushford (his parent's address) but I don't know if they actually had any poultry. He would have been 43 when the war broke out so would have been too old for active service and may still have been medically unfit anyway. I am trying to find out if he was in the Home Guard or a branch of Civil Defence or even the Auxiliaries. I can't imagine he didn't volunteer for something as he had already done so 20+ years before. I know he had a great knowledge of the land and his area from chats he had with his nephew a few years later. He was sometimes know as Dick to his family, although I've no idea how that came about.

Does anyone have any ideas please as to how I might find out more about him.

Many thanks everyone
Paul Crook

Thanks for the reply. I'm sure he wasn't in the regular services due to age and possibly lack of fitness. I can't seem to find any of the family on the 1939 register. Could they have 'forgotten' about Rushford - it's only a very small village.

Paul

There is only one entry for Norfolk for the Crook surname b 1896 on the 1939 register and he was Arthur C.

All the Arthur Crook marriages in Norfolk from 1918 have middle initials.  Who did he marry

To find on 1939 register look up Elsie.

The mother Annie Elizabeth was born 31 May 1870, the father John died 23 February 1931 age 66.

Deaths are from NFHS transcription of memorials at Rushford. Notes are that Arthur's stone has fallen over.

Thanks for all the replies and CaroleW for notifying Ancestry of the date of birth error. Might explain why I couldn't find anything!
All the best to you all
