Mary Ann THOMAS marriage bef 1839
« on: Thursday 28 May 20 03:55 BST (UK) »
Mary Ann THOMAS & William Bowen SCOWCROFT are said to have married although I am unable to locate the marriage.

William was a son of James SCOWCROFT, a Solicitor & Mary BOWEN baptised 8 May 1816 St Mary's Haverfordwest.  Mary Ann a daughter of Richard THOMAS, a Linen Draper, was baptised 21 Jun 1817 St Mary's Haverfordwest .

Edward SCOWCROFT whose birth was registered in Haverfordwest in 1839 is  said to be a child of William and Mary Ann. I have not located a baptism for Edward so cannot confirm this relationship.

I cannot locate what became of Mary Ann.  Edward migrated to the USA. His death does record parents of William and Mary Ann.

William migrated to Australia in 1841 with his brother James.  When William died in 1882 in country Queensland, his friend, the informant did not know if William had married or had children.  No Will has been located.

Hoping for assistance please as I don't seem able to make any more headway unfortunately hence reaching out for some assistance.

SCOWCROFT, EDWARD       -
GRO Reference: 1839  S Quarter in HAVERFORDWEST  Volume 26  Page 553

Illegitimate, child of a SCOWCROFT, not a THOMAS, so not Mary’s child.

Hello Jamjar,

Many thanks Jamjar.

What is the source of the birth please?

Is the birth parent a female SCOWCROFT?

It’s from GRO UK.

It is my understanding that when no mother’s maiden name is seen, then it means that the child is the illegitimate child of a female of the surname shown.

Interesting this is.

SCOWCROFT, ANN  DOROTHY     -
GRO Reference: 1841  S Quarter in HAVERFORDWEST  Volume 26  Page 574

Yet, her baptism and censuses have her as daughter of Francis John Scowcroft and Elizabeth Llewellin:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X1TZ-4S4

1841: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M777-8GM

1851: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SG6F-9XC

Then Ann’s brother and sisters have mmn as MILLARD on GRO.

I can’t see Edward on censuses.

If the birth certificate names the father as Francis SCOWCROFT and the mother as Elizabeth LLEWELLIN without the word 'formerly' in her column then the birth will be indexed as shown.  The GRO have no way of knowing if LLEWELLIN is the mother's maiden surname so they will not index it.  The same goes for the bith of Edward.  You have to see the certificate to see how the parents are named.

The marriage:

Jun 1841 Haverfordwest 26 911
MILLARD Elizabeth Llewhelling
SCORROFT Francis John
SCOWOFT Francis John

Have searched Rootschat and see other mentions of these folk. I thought the names rang a bell.  ;D
