Marriage of Mary Barnes
« on: Thursday 28 May 20 12:08 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am looking for the marriage of William ROBINS and Mary Barnes around 1823 in Sussex. Mary was born in Wisborough Green in 1801. And I know that by 1841, the couple had a pork butcher shop in George Street in Brighton. So they could had married at Wisborough Green or Brighton. Or indeed somewhere completely different. The date of 1823 comes from their only child, Emma being born in 1824 in Brighton. There is some evidence that William was a non-conformist of the Independent variety.

I know that Mary's sister Sarah was baptised on 30 Jan 1803 at Wisborough Green. I have seen a transcript of the record, but would also like to locate an image. Any ideas?

They married in Lewes at St John sub Castro on 8 June 1824.  Both otp and William was apparently a widower.

Nell - that's truly wonderful and very prompt.

I have an FS account, but for some reason when I searched for Sarah, all I was offered was a transcript and a tree! So many thanks for finding the baptism.

I still can't find the marriage. Where did you find it?

Sussex Marriage Index.  Unfortunately the parish register itself (only transcripts) does not seem to be available on FS.

Little Nell - you found this marriage for me some time ago.

I need to remind it having somehow lost it in my records. Could you please provide concise instructions about how to find it again.

Many thanks

As I indicated in my reply no 4, I found it in the Sussex Marriage Index, an index that was produced by the Sussex Family History Group.  The index can be purchased from the group here:

https://sfhg.uk/shop/support/marriage-index-cd

The parish register images are not available online  :(

Many thanks. I didn't realise that one needed to purchase the CD. I'm not even sure that I followed it up at the time, as I don't seem to have the CD.

This family is causing me all sorts of problems. I have found two deaths on FreeBMD:

Sarah BARNES Q1 1853 Brighton 2b 121
Mary ROBINS  Q3 1888 Petworth 2b 175

But I can't find them on the GRO site to order the certificates!
