Hi,
Essie, thanks for trying.
MAJM
This is my fellow, but I hadn't seen the Goulburn Gaol record so thank you very much.
The Goulburn Herald reports name his wife and her brother, they were remanded several times until they were set free ( I do think they were guilty though)
I was calculating his birth from his death registration, but we all know how wrong they can be.
I will send for a transcription today.
thanks again.

"..James Clarke, born c 1823 Sydney"  Is this also from the death certificate?. Might not be correct.

Birth certificates of children should record age and birthplace of parents.

BDM NSW  CLARKE marriages 1850 - 1865  @ Gouburn............ not so many really, finds three, additional to your James CLARKE, 1857

1776/1857 CLARKE Sussanal   marr.  LAWLER  Thomas
1963/1859 CLARKE Rebecca   marr.  GORDON James
1620/1860 CLARKE Margaret   marr.  LLOYD George

Are these possibly siblings to your James CLARKE?

Among the children born to James CLARKE and Sarah BURGESS, do you see a Susannah....a Rebecca. These are less common names, and people often give names of their siblings to their own children.

Nothing absolute here but worth keeping in mind.

What is your interest in this couple / their family? It might be possible to assist your research by some other mean.

Hi,
Of their 10 children, none have those names, & death registrations did not show the same parents for all. I am now doubting his fathers name, his wife could have given his name instead!
My interest is I am helping a friend to research her family, which is very complicated with a couple of bigamists, convicts, a few court cases, 1st cousins marrying. shipwrecks, etc etc
I will order a transcription of the marriage & hope it tells me something. If not I may have to just draw the line under this fellow; sometimes the record just isn't to be found.
thanks for your help.
