Thanks! I've managed to get hold of my grandmother's birth certificate, which has Charles John at 35 years old (1890-35=c1855) and says he was born in Redruth, England - which was a surprise to me! His father was also Charles John, so the family story about coming from Forfarshire must have applied to him.

Newspaper report of the wedding says senior was from Forfar, but there is no sign of a death that fits.  Can’t help wondering if it was a fabrication.  ;D

Margaret Husband Gray died 2 April 1895, there is a confirmation sealed on behalf of Charles John Gray. The will might be interesting. I am not quite sure of the procedure with Confirmations (Scottish probate)

Interesting to see that Charles John was at one point a master mariner. He could have just jumped on a ship leaving Australia, never to be seen again

If the will was confirmed in Scotland, you should be abe to download a copy from Scotland's People.

(The term 'Probate' does not exist in Scots Law.)
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
