Charles John senior died in London  24 Feb 1856, MI at Redruth, St Uny.
buried at Nunhead cemetery Lindin Grove.

There is a death registration for a Charles J. Gray age 83 in Sept 1938 Alton Hampshire.

Dundee Advertiser 22 June 1863

Friday june 19
Gray’s Trustees v Robertson, et e contra.

Charles Gray, merchant in Forfar, died in 1811 leaving a trust-disposition and settlement, and relative codicil, by which he conveyed to his trustees specially certain heritable property including subjects at the Cross of Forfar, with a power of sale for purposes therein expressed, of the property other than that situated at the Cross. In 1844 there was a general settlement of accounts between General Gray, the truster’s son and surviving trustee, and the other beneficiaries….

General Gray died on 21st December 1857, vested in the property at the Cross as sruviving trustee, having also purchased the interests of one of his brothers and a nephew.

in 1811 a Lieutenant Charles Gray of the Royal Marines published some poetry.
One titled 'The Prisoner of War"  is printed in the Star (London) 27 September 1811

Not sure if your man was a Royal Marine or not
