To understand the estate and the trust dispersal "Woodstockaus" would need to look at the original document, and read more detail from the newspapers.  I know another son, George Gray was also in the military and in India - possibly others too.

Other information available ----
Charles Gray the merchant has a ledger dated 1786 -1811 at the UK National Archives reference NRA(S)2185
And at the Angus Archives reference MS555 there is an account book 1793-1808 related to his brewhouse.

Re General Gray, the will and the problem with dates for Major Charles Gray's death - I can't get to the original documents, but from your summaries I wonder if "General Gray" was one of the brothers and not Charles? Perhaps Charles wasn't made a trustee because he was on overseas service when the father died? That way we have Major Charles dying in India in 1826 and General unnamed brother dying in 1857.

Apart from all that, can I ask a couple more questions? Could someone please tell me the names of Major Charles' brothers-in-law, male cousins and nephews? I'm trying to find a family connection to someone (not named Gray) who was an officer in the 78th Highland Regiment during the 1830s. Once I have some names, I can compare them with the Army Lists. Thanks.

The General was James!

Can’t believe how long it took me to figure that out.

Lansdowne Terrace, Cheltenham
There are some great advertisements describing his house and contents which were auctioned in 1859

It would be easier and faster to give the name of the officer you are looking for.
Otherwise the family is listed previously for you.

Yes, I know it’s the long way around, but I haven’t been able to narrow down the list of officers - I have an heirloom that originated with the 78th during the 1830s but no record of who it belonged to. All I’ve been able to find out is that it would have been an officer, but the Army Lists don’t have a Gray in the regiment during that time so I’m down to hoping I might stumble across a family connection instead. Any clues would be much appreciated. Thanks to all of you for the avalanche of info so far!
