James Leach in Lanark, Ontario, Canada
« on: Saturday 30 May 20 21:00 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I am looking for any information for James Leach in the Lanark, Ontario, Canada area. This is what I know. He was born July 13, 1783 in Ireland and emigrated to Canada circa 1820. I think he was married to Anne Unknown and had at least 2 children, Samuel and Margaret. He died January 3, 1857 in Lanark. Any information on this family would be greatly much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Are your dates correct? 1851 Census for Canada West (now Ontario), actually taken in early 1852 (ages given are as of next birthday):

Beckwith, Lanark County:

Leech, James, farmer, b. Canada, farmer, aged 26, married, Church of England
Leech,Ann, b. Canada, aged 19, married
Leech, Samuel, b. Canada, aged 2
Leech, Margaret, b. Canada, aged 7 (suggests a second marriage for James)

They are living next door to:
Leech, Samuel, farmer, b. Ireland, farmer, aged 50, married, Church of England
Leech, Jane, b. Ireland, aged 50, married
Leech, William, b. Canada, aged 20
Leech, Jane, b. Canada, aged 18
Leech, Helen, b. Canada, aged 16
Leech, Samuel, b. Canada, aged 14
Leech, Sarah, b. Canada, aged 14
Kidd, Thomas, b. Canada, aged 8

This suggests that Samuel Sr. is James' father (living next door to each other, and James names his first son after his father).

1861 Census has Samuel and Jane, aged 66 and 64 still in Beckwith with some of their grown children still at home. They are still alive in the 1871 Census aged 71 and 74 (wife older than husband).  This shows how the ages of people are not a given, depending on who was providing the info.  The son, also named Samuel is married with children and living with his parents.

Online tree suggests Samuel Sr. was born in Co. Wexford, Ireland in about 1799.  He married Jane Saunders in Franktown, Lanark Co. in about 1823/24.  It shows your James as a son who married Ann McCarthy about 1848. Lots of info here to be verified:

I am going out that way next Monday. I can have a short stop at the Parish Church in Beckwith, very nice Anglican Church and cemetery and have a look for any Leech graves and stones.
