17934 left his effects to a Miss Lillian E Slack (or Stack) his sole legatee - does that help (Soldiers Effects).  He enlisted in April/May 1915.  5th  Battalion was a Shrewsbury raised battalion but that does not necessarily mean he was from there.

Age - he was over 40 but he volunteered so I don't think age is relevant

Would this mean he made a will , would there be any details of the document, or are soldiers effects his personal belongings.  Thanks.

The Effects Register recorded any money the army owed him (eg pay) and his war gratuity.  These were sent to the legatee he named in his will.  She (in this case) would also be sent any personal belongings he had with him in the field.
His will can be purchased from here (£10 I believe):

https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/Wills?Surname=hatfield&SurnameGrants=hatfield&FirstName=thomas&FirstNameGrants=thomas&YearOfDeath=1917&YearOfDeathGrants=1917&AdvancedSearch=True&IsGrantSearch=False&IsCalendarSearch=False#soldiers

although it may simply say some thing like "in the event of my death I leave everything to Lillian Slack etc.
In money he left £1 9s 11d in pay and £10 war gratuity.  Any belongings were often recorded in his record (which we don't have).

Now trying to find him on a War Memorial.  The War Memorial Index isn't showing him, so any other ideas please.

https://www.iwm.org.uk/memorials

Thanks,  I'm searching this site, but getting either results for Hatfield town, or just one Hatfield name and dozens of different ones.

I thought there might be district War Memorials listed somewhere.

The IWM site returns 13 memorials for Rhyl, only one of which has the names pictured.  Liverpool has 1327.  If Rhyl is indicative, it would suggest there is no one place that lists all the names on all the memorials (IWM say they have over 80000 memorials)

If no-one forwarded his name to the local committee he wouldn't be on one.  His Liverpool connections may have ceased with the death of his father (I haven't checked the mother).  At Rhyl there was Lillian (if we assume she is still there in 1917) but his connection there was not strong so even if she forwarded his name it may have been rejected.

He is clearly determined to remain hidden!
