Westminster Burials
« on: Monday 01 June 20 11:29 BST (UK) »
Is anyone familiar with the Westminster burial registers, specifically for St Georges, Hanover Square?  I found an ancestor amongst what looks like the gravediggers logbook but the entry baffles me.  Every entry has the details of the individual - name, age, address etc, then what look like map co-ordinates and then (this is the bit that baffles me) another name. Who and why?

I wondered if they were next of kin, or the person arranging the burial or maybe the last person in the grave - I've never seen this before.

Unlike many others on the page, the name recorded against my Jonathan Smith is Eliza Eleanor Smith which suggests a relationship but she doesn't feature in his tree and Smith is very common.  I've attached a copy.  Any ideas?

Is it the name of the person whose grave is at the head (or the foot on the next entry) of the grave.

Perhaps a niece? There's an Eliza Eleanor Smith baptised 1809/10  St George Hanover Square, father Thomas...

Yes, Mckha489, I wondered this too and just it being a coincidence.  Jonathan is actually Jonathan James Smith and I saw the baptism for Eliza Eleanor, bevo but I haven't made an actual connection yet.  I think his parents were John and Elizabeth. I've never seen one of these logbooks before, there's the usual burial register too.  That had a gap where age should go so finding this other reference filled in that blank as I didn't know his age etc.

Thanks both.

If you look over the pages at least one says “at foot”
And the ones in the vault say at end or words similar, but don’t have another name.
And there is that one that is “near the big stone with Clarke” or similar.
I’m sure it’s a location thing

Added, and there is one that is “at side”

Yes, that makes sense.  The coincidence threw me, I wasn't sure if it was a clue to be chased up.  I'm happy with the idea it's a placing reference. Thanks again Mckha489.
