Help to find the missing Jane McGurk born abt 1885
« on: Tuesday 02 June 20 22:15 BST (UK) »
Hi, was wondering can anyone help me as I have ran out of ideas. There was a Jane McGurk (neice) from Moveagh, Cookstown in the 1901 census who was born about 1885 as she was 16 in 1901. She was left £100 by a Jane Bloomer in 1897 and that's all I can get on her. Can't find her birth cert or what happened to her after 1901. Many thanks.

Welcome to RootsChat.
Did Jane Bloomer give a named relationship to Jane McGurk in the Will.

I see Jane was 73 when she died
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1897/05878/4666753.pdf
With a Frances Bloomer as informant and a James Bloomer on the Will Calendar.

Jane McGurk is living with George Bloomer and wife Bridget Quin

The difficulty with the terms niece/ nephew is they were often used quite loosely.
Jane may be a child the family cared for but is not in fact related, hence my question as to how she is named in the Will.
Was Jane Bloomer mother of George, James and Frances?

Might be just a coincidence, but a George Bloomer was a witness to the marriage of John McGurk and Mary Conway who were married at Lissan RC Church in 1882, John and Mary had a daughter Jane in 1886:

Thankyou for your help.

Jane used the word niece in her will but said she could only get the money when she turned 21.

As far as I can make out jane had sons called james, george, joesph (who was in america at the time she wrote the will) and another son thomas (who she states died in america)

I wonder was Jane Bloomer formerly McGurk?  I can see a couple of early 1850s Cookstown parish baptisms for parents Robert Bloomer and Jane McGurk.

The Lissan church baptismal record for the Jane McGurk born to John McGurk and Mary Conway says that she went on to marry Robert Turner in 1919... but I still don't see anything to rule her in or out - does 'Turner' rings any bells for you?

There was a James Bloomer who married a Mary Barrett at Cookstown in 1878, the slight interest being his address (Movea) and father's name (Robert)... but still not much to go on:

Looking more positive, for this looks like a possibility for George Bloomer's baptism, 25 May 1852, 'Geo of Robert Bloomer and Jane McGurk' (right page):

https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000632533#page/4/mode/1up

Edited to add: This looks like a son Thomas Bloomer to the same couple on 2 November 1854 (top of left page):

https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000632533#page/23/mode/1up

This time Lissan RC parish, 3 March 1851, Robert Bloomer married Jane McGurk (right page):

George Bloomer was an executor when Jane's father John McGurk died:

The Will of John M'Gurk late of Drumgrass County Tyrone Farmer who died 6 July 1894 at same place was proved at Armagh by George Bloomer of Moveagh said County and John Donaghy of Killybaskey County Londonderry Farmers the Executors.

You can read John's will online, daughter Jane gets a mention, wife Mary Conway had predeceased him, Mary was only 8 when John died, so you can see how she probably ended up with the Bloomers:

https://apps.proni.gov.uk/WillsCalendar_IE/WillsSearch.aspx

Still don't know the exact relationship, maybe John McGurk was George Bloomer's cousin (just guessing for now)?
