Possible Guernsey marriage
« on: Wednesday 03 June 20 15:44 BST (UK) »
This is the first time I've 'wandered' into the Channel Islands, family history wise, and there don't appear to be any marriage records on either FindMyPast or Ancestry.

I've found a couple on the 1911 census living in St Peter Port. He is Alfred George Matthews and says he was born there. His wife is Ellen (or Helen) Louise Crockford who was born in Berkshire. According to the 1911 census they were married c 1897. I know marriages often took place in the bride's home county but I can't find it so am assuming it took place in Guernsey.

Can anyone please find it for me?  :-\
HELP!!!

Have you looked on family search?  I don't know if they have Channel marriages on there.

Sorry, yes, I should have said I'd also looked on FS but they only seem to have baptisms, including some of Alfred and Ellen's children.

I had this problem recently with Isle of Man records! Not sure why these island communities are detached from mainland records. Just to make life more complicated, obviously! Its working!!

Just in case anyone comes across this thread and can help - I've now discovered that one of Ellen's brothers, Edward Crockford, is also in Guernsey on the 1911 census with his wife Jessie.

Again, I can't find a mainland marriage for them so am thinking it may have been another Guernsey marriage - about 1908.

I've got 4 more of their siblings to go - hoping that none of them followed their older siblings to the Channel Islands!!

Alfred George Matthews was born 19 June 1874 St Pierre Port Guernsey, father James William Matthews, mother Sarah Jane Slade.
Ref: ancestry

Children of Alfred George and Hellen Louisa Matthews
Hellen Louisa Maud born 15 September 1900 Guernsey
Alfred Henry Slade Matthews born 24 April 1906 Guernsey

1901 census Guernsey
Alfred George Matthews 26
Helen 25 England
Helen L Maud 7 months
Sarah Jane Smith 50 born England
Henry (aka Harry) Crockford 18 visitor
Alice Crockford 14 (wrong on ancestry as 24)

Sarah Jane Smith is probably Alfred's mother having remarried

Hi among,

Thanks for that. Still no sign of any marriages, though?

FYI I did have Richard Crockford's marriage in Cookham. It was his brother Edward's marriage to Jessie that I thought might also be in Guernsey.

Fortunately, the remaining siblings are all accounted for, marrying on the mainland.
