Levi Chambers and his family missing from 1871 census?
« on: Thursday 04 June 20 19:42 BST (UK) »
My ancestor Levi Chambers born 1837 Weston Longville Norfolk, moved to the North Riding of Yorkshire in the 1860s.  His wife was Harriet born 1837 in East Tuddenham Norfolk.  Levi worked as an ironstone miner in Eston, as all of his children after 1862 were born there.  However I cannot seem to find him, his wife or children on the 1871 census for Yorkshire where i would have expected the family to have lived.  Their children Susannah b1868 Eston, Robert b1872 Eston and Thomas b1874 in Eston, yet there is no sign of them on the 1871 census.  There is a Thomas Chambers and Hannah his wife living at 74 California Eston a miner.  I don't think this is him though.  Levi Chambers tragically died in Upsall mine near Eston on 25 June 1875, in a mining accident, crushed by tubs, age 40, though he would have been 38.  Did the family move to avoid the census or could there be pages missing from the enumerators book?

It looks as though Guisborough is the district (at least for Susannah Chambers mmn Bales, Jun qtr 1868).
Ayr: Barnes, Wylie
Caithness: MacGregor
Essex: Eldred (Pebmarsh)
Gloucs: Timbrell (Winchcomb)
Hants: Stares (Wickham)
Lincs: Maw, Jackson (Epworth, Belton)
London: Pierce
Suffolk: Markham (Framlingham)
Surrey: Gosling (Richmond)
Wilts: Matthews, Tarrant (Calne, Preshute)
Worcs: Milward (Redditch)
Yorks: Beaumont, Crook, Moore, Styring (Huddersfield); Middleton (Church Fenton); Exley, Gelder (High Hoyland); Barnes, Birchinall (Sheffield); Kenyon, Wood (Cumberworth/Denby Dale)

Levi Chambers wife was Harriet Bales.  There children are as folows: Harriet Ann Chambers b 10/04/1860 in Hornsea Yorkshire, Charles b 23/01/862 in Lyng Norfolk, Mary Anne b 1864 in Eston, Robert b 1866 Eston, Susannah b 1868 Eston, a gap until 1872 was born Levi 1872 in Eston and Thomas b 1874 Eston.  All of their children from 1864-1874 were registered in Guisborough district.  They all appear on the 1881 census for Eston living with their mother Harriet Harris, as she was widowed in 1875.  She married John Harris an ironstone miner in 1876 in Guisborough district.  I cannot seem to find Levi Chambers, his wife Harriet and children on the 1871 census, which is a mystery, unless they moved away from Yorkshire an came back in 1872, or their names could be misspellt?

Yes, these are the correct children.  I only have birth certificates for the first 2 children.  It seems unusual that Levi and Harriet moved back to Norfolk to have John in 1862, then they moved to North Riding of Yorkshire by 1864.  They are on the 1861 census living in Yorkshire, Levi, his wife Harriet and daughter Harriet an Ag Laborer.  Hope this is of use to you.

I can see why you made mention of that Thomas and Hannah CHAMBER(s) family in the 1871 census:
 Piece: 4854; Folio: 49; Page: 14

The children do seem to match up quite well, don't they?

This could be them as he never had a brother called Thomas.  I wonder if the enumerator has made a mistake?

That wouldn't be the first time I've seen a mistake like that!
I'm not seeing young William's birth anywhere??
