Yes I did check Newspapers on Find My Past and I do also know all about his parents and siblings. It was really only his death and whether he had been married I was searching for but Rosie99 seems to have answered that question for me. Thank you so much for your help though.

Do you mean you are going to get the will to see if a wife or child is mentioned in it?

I have changed the date on reply 4 to 1926.  Looking again at the registers there is another person with him on the register in 1929/30/31 - Hannah Elizabeth Townend.  She is possibly just lodging, electoral registers don't give any other information

Hannah E Townend appears on the 1939 Register with George = Housekeeper, Paid.

It went to probate and there is no mention of a wife or family. Could this mean that he left no actual will? I don't know much about this side of things. It just says probate to the specific accountant and auditor. I don't expect he will have left them his money. It wasn't thousands of pounds so there wouldn't have been legacies etc. If there was no will it would automatically go to his wife, wouldn't it? Would she be mentioned if so or would she only be mentioned if there was an actual will which mentioned her?

In case BumbleB is busy
https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/#wills

register for a free account, search wills (check you are on the correct tab for the year range) and you'll see the copy of the probate calendar. Use the details from that to order a copy will and pay online by card. You should get both a copy of the will and the Grant of administration.

NB time scales can vary for delivery but it should give you an estimated delivery date.

They email when your copy is available to download.

Via this website

You will have to register with your e-mail address etc.  but it is then quite straightforward.

If you do get stuck, just come back again  :)
